Where is Davenport, Florida?

The settlement that eventually became Davenport was founded in 1838 when the US military established Fort Davenport during the Second Seminole War. Positioned approximately 12 miles north of present-day Davenport, the fort was part of a series constructed at 20-mile intervals along a trail from Fort Brooke to Fort Mellon. Named after Colonel William Davenport, the fort had a brief existence. Contrary to an alternative claim suggesting the city was named after a railroad conductor, no documented evidence supports this.

The modern city of Davenport emerged in the 1880s with the extension of the South Florida Railroad. Initially called Horse Creek, the settlement derived its name from a creek documented in an 1849 US Army survey, flowing into Snell Creek and eventually Lake Hatchineha within the Kissimmee River system. In 1884, a post office was established in Horse Creek, which was later renamed Davenport in 1886. Davenport attained incorporation in 1915.
