Venice is a charming coastal city located in Sarasota county, in the west-central region of Florida, USA. Situated along the picturesque Gulf of Mexico, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of Sarasota, it boasts a rich history dating back to its origins as a humble fishing village established in the 1870s.

Originally envisioned as a retirement haven for members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers around 1925, Venice’s development plans were disrupted by the infamous stock market crash of 1929. However, the city persevered, evolving into a quaint resort destination renowned for its tarpon fishing. Originally dubbed “Horse and Chaise” due to a distinctive arrangement of trees resembling a horse and buggy, the city was later renamed in 1888 by a settler who was struck by its resemblance to the famous Italian city of Venice.

Nestled nearby are attractions such as Oscar Scherer State Park and the rejuvenating Warm Mineral Springs spa, located approximately 10 miles (16 km) to the east. Venice is particularly renowned for the abundance of prehistoric shark teeth that wash up on its shores, with enthusiasts flocking to its beaches. An annual Sharks Tooth and Seafood Festival held in August celebrates this unique aspect of the city’s natural heritage.
